Final Evaluation

I really enjoyed this task and all the aspects of it. For the first time I had an opportunity to do a lot of extra work and it was a very good experience.
All the images I've put on my blog and selected as my final prints are my favourites. I've taken a lot of photos but decided to only pick the best ones and share them with everyone else.
My project was aimed at capturing the still life and the beauty of food and all the things around it like people preparing food and enjoying it.
The compositional aspects of my images throughout the project were based on my preferences and mixing still life and movement together to get the best results and make my photos look interesting.
I've edited some of my photos in Photoshop because I wanted to make them a little bit brighter and eye catching. I still find it quite hard to use Photoshop correctly so sometimes I use a different software.
Throughout the project I was trying to experiment with the depth of field as much as I could. I wanted to make my images look more appealing and I wanted all of them to look a bit different.
Sometimes it was hard for me to find and use good lighting as I've taken most of the photos inside.
I was trying to use the rule of thirds because I wanted my photos to look good when I print them out.
Next time I will try to use more angles and different lighting and I will also try to take more photos outside.
Overall I enjoyed this project and I hope it's going to be useful for me in the future.

Photo shoot plan

I decided to take photos in a pub. I will have an opportunity to photograph different types of food before someone eats them. I think it's a really good idea and it's different to everything I've done before. I will do it upstairs, in a separate area which will be quiet and comfortable. I will bring all the important equipment with me so I will be able to create good lighting and photos are going to look more professional.
All the images will be taken during the day so I will be able to use some of the natural lighting and all the shadows are going to look better.
I will be putting all the food on a white table cloth and white plates but I won't include any cutlery in the photos.
The equipment I will need includes my camera, flash, different lenses, tripod and lights.
I won't have to spend any money because someone is going to take me there and pick me up and I don't have to pay for to food I will be photographing.
I am going to take photos on Thursday because that's the only day when I have a chance to do it.

Posters Research

I decided to do a research on food posters for bars and restaurants to have an idea on what I have to include in my poster. I really like an idea of a plain, easy to read poster like the first one I picked. Also I think it's good when the poster includes some appetizing, good looking food because that's the main thing that draws peoples attention to it.

Food posters should be colourful and eye catching not dull and boring.

Task 1 - Research

Historical photographers

George Lance

1834

  • a painter who specialized in panting still life (fruit and flowers).
  • I like this painting although I think it's a little bit bland and would look better if it was more colourful.
  • the painting shows that the room was not light enough because you can see the shadows on the left side.
Frans Snyders

1650

  • a painter of animals, hunting scenes, market scenes and still life.
  • I like this painting more than the first one because it's bright and catches the eye straight away.
  • the painting shows motionless food as well as people and animals.
Contemporary photographers

Andrew Scrivani

_MG_0959 (1)

  • a photographer and food stylist from New York.
  • I like this photo because you can see the egg coming down the side of the sandwich which looks pretty good and not boring.
  • it's not that colourful but the lighting was good.
Benoit Levac

Brunch photo by Benoit Levac

  • a food photographer who likes working with artificial light.
  • I find this photo interesting because there's so much to look at, you have to try to focus on one thing at a time.
  • it's a very messy photo but I like it.

Fish Market

I had a chance to photograph a fish market. It was very busy so I managed to capture only a few of items available there. I think photos came out quite good because they are eye catching and interesting to look at. I enjoyed doing it as it was something different than what I usually photograph.

Fruit & Veg

I've taken a few photos at Leeds market and thought they looked quite interesting. I was trying to capture still life as well as people and movement. I really liked all the colours and contrasts. I really enjoyed doing it because I love photographing colourful objects and making the most of it.

Meat

I had an opportunity to photograph one day from the life of a butcher. I enjoyed it because it was different and interesting. I've done it as some extra work for this project. I've taken many photos but I decided to only pick the best ones as there was so many of them. I tried to show the way people work there and the way meat looks before it's prepared and brought to the shops.

Food & Pubs

I had an opportunity to photograph some of the fresh prepared meals at Stansfield Arms pub. I really enjoyed doing it as a part of my project and I've learned a lot about food photography and how to make food look appealing on photos. I found it quite hard to take photos because the lighting was not too good and I didn't have any additional equipment with me so I had to work with what I had. That's why I had to edit all the photos and make them brighter, some of them may still appear a little bit dark though.

This is the first photo I've taken. It's a starter and one of the main things I was trying to capture was how colourful it all looks. I think it's a good photo but I think it should be a little bit brighter.

It's another starter I decided to photograph. This photo is brighter so I think it looks a little bit better than a previous one. I like the colours and all the details. I like how everything gets darker on the right side and it's very bright on the other.

This is a photo of a main course. I like the details but I think colours are quite bland and they don't show how pretty the dish looked in real life. Also it's not in focus at the front which I would change next time.

This is one of my favourite images. The colours are very bright and intense and everything is in focus. I think it looks good because a plate and table cloth contrast with food. I don't think there's anything I would change but maybe I would try using a different angle.

I like this photo because it's not dark and you can see many different colours but they all work good together. One sweet potato on the left side is out of focus but I don't think it affects this image. If I could I would make the salad on the left look less dark.

This is a photo of salmon on rice and I think it looks quite good because it's colour coordinated. The food contains a black colour and that's why this photo seems a lot darker than it should. The only thing I would change would be the background.

This is also one of my favourites.
